Jean Valjean is a character in the 1862 novel Les Misérables by Victor Hugo and the 1985 stage adaption of the novel. He spent nineteen years in the Bagne de Toulon. After he is released, he breaks parole and becomes the mayor of Montreuil-sur-Mer, where he meets Fantine and promises to raise her daughter. After Fantine dies, he becomes Cosette’s adoptive father. Years later, Valjean saves Marius Pontmercy, Cosette’s lover, from the barricade of the 1832 June Rebellion. He, along with Marius, is the only one to survive the rebellion, although he dies shortly afterwards.
He is associated with the Society of the Friends of the Abaissé.
