The Thénardiers are characters in the 1862 novel Les Misérables by Victor Hugo and the 1985 stage adaption of the novel. The Thénardiers are innkeepers and parents of Éponine. They owned The Sergent at Waterloo, an inn in Montfermeil, for at least eight years before becoming bankrupt and moving to Paris. They housed Cosette but treated her like a servant for eight years before Jean Valjean took her to Paris. Ten years later, they moved to the slums of Paris, becoming thieves. When they recognize Valjean, they plan several times to rob him. They attend Marius and Cosette’s wedding and attempt to blackmail Marius.
