Background[]

Marius Pontmercy is a member of the Friends of the Abaissé. He was the son of Colonel Georges Pontmercy and grandson of Monsiuer Gillenormand. He was raised by his grandfather, and moved out shortly after he turned eighteen, after having an argument with Gillenormand.

Marius met Éponine Thénardier when she tried to impress him by reading to show that she was literate. He pitied her, giving her a coin, and they became friends. She fell in love with him, but he did not return her feelings and began a relationship with Cosette Fauchelevent. Éponine died in his arms on June 6, 1832 at the barricade after she was shot in the spine and shoulder.

Marius was injured in the battle, and was saved by Jean Valjean, Cosette’s adopted father. They were the only two to survive the uprising, and Jean Valjean revealed his true identity to Marius. Three days after the battle, Marius married Cosette, and when the Thénardiers tried to blackmail Marius, he realized that Valjean had saved him from the barricade. Marius and Cosette went to the dying Valjean’s bedside, and Valjean revealed Cosette’s past to her right before his death.
